Journals and templates
Templates
What a template is, what it changes, what it never contains, and how the two templates that ship compare.
A template decides how a new journal is worded and organised. It is chosen when you make a journal and cannot be changed afterwards (make a new journal to use a different one). Two templates ship with Mossnote.
What a template changes#
- Names of sections: for example Journal or Daily journal, People or NPCs.
- Which sections exist and in what order. Only the Stardew Valley template has a Farm section.
- The calendar a new journal starts with: a day counter or four seasons.
- Quick actions: one-tap buttons under the note box (Stardew Valley only).
- Suggested tags you can add with a click.
- The accent colour (a tint): moss green or plum.
What a template never contains#
A template is wording and structure only. It carries no facts about any game: no characters, items, places, recipes or mechanics, and none may be added. That is what makes Mossnote spoiler-free: everything in a journal is something you wrote. Even the Stardew Valley template's four seasons are just a calendar you can rename.

What both templates share#
Everything else is the same: notes with tags, people and links, questions and discoveries, people, maps, search, export, import and snapshots, themes, shortcuts and section settings. The guides in this site mark the few places where the two differ.
What you can change afterwards#
In Settings → Template and sections you can rename, hide and reorder the sections of a journal (Today and Journal always stay), switch the quick actions off and add the suggested tags. A Reset sections to the template's defaults button undoes your changes. The Stardew Valley calendar can be edited in Settings → Calendar.
Another game?#
The template picker and Settings → Template and sections both have a Request a template link that opens the project's feature-request form in your browser. For a game without its own template, use Default. Adding a template to the project is done by adding a file of wording and structure to the source code (src/shared/templates) and listing it.
